Foster

We can only operate thanks to those who open their home to kitties in need.  Our foster homes are our most urgent need as there is never a shortage of kitties needing help.

What is required of a foster parent?

  • Small space to allow your foster to acclimate to your home

  • Ability to attend adoption events or set up transport to the event for your foster

  • Ability to provide food, water, litter and of course LOVE

  • You decide how many cats or kittens you want to foster

What is provided by SOS?

  • Food and litter when needed

  • Screening potential adopters

  • Organizing adoption events

  • All medical expenses including vaccination, spays/neuters and emergencies

  • Ongoing support and guidance

Cats and kittens could remain in foster care anywhere from a few days, a few weeks, several months, years and in some rare cases, their entire lives. You are only required to foster for as long as you decide.

If you think you have space in your home to foster, please complete the foster application and you will be contacted by an SOS Foster Coordinator. We provide a supportive group of volunteers and fellow foster families willing to help you along the way.

Additional Fostering Information

  • Once the foster coordinator has approved the individual as an SOS foster, an agreement will be sent via PandaDoc to be signed.

  • Before a cat will be placed with the new foster a virtual home check will be performed by the coordinator via video chat or videos/pictures sent via e-mail.

SOS Foster Parents must agree to honour and follow all policies and procedures as laid out by SOS.

  • Any foster home taking in a cat prior to the ten days of quarantine required by SOS must follow the quarantine protocol.

  • ll fosters must remain in contact with the foster coordinator and supply updated pictures and fill out a cat bio form for each of their foster cats.

  • SOS will supply all food and supplies for their foster cat(s) if the foster parent is unable to.

  • Foster parents may be asked to participate in adoption events, promotional events and fundraising events. While this is not required, foster parents must have their foster cat(s) available if requested.

  • Foster parents must allow their foster cat(s) to be placed in partnered locations if the cat(s) are matched. Cat(s) placed in PetValu will only be held for 2 weeks before needing to be returned to foster care. Cat(s) placed in one of our partnered cafes will remain there until they are adopted.

  • There is a maximum of three fosters allowed in any one foster home to ensure proper care and manage the risk of having to place a number of animals at one time should an emergency arise.

An exception will be made for nursing mothers and litters of kittens. Other exceptions may be made on a case by case basis.

Decisions on the number of cats rescued at one time will be made based on capacity across the foster care system.

  • Any friends or family interested in adopting must follow proper adoption protocol. Cat/kitten(s) can not be promised to friends or family. Adoptions are on a FCFS basis and all require an adoption application to be considered.

  • Cat/kitten(s) are put up for adoption on the website prior to being ready with a note on the date they can go to their new home. In these cases it may be required of the foster to keep in touch with the adopter during the time between adoption and when the cat/kitten(s) are ready to go to their new home.
