Adopt

At SOS Prairie Rescue, our primary goal for our rescued cats is to find them their forever home however, we also want to ensure they are being adopted to a responsible and pet-friendly family. We make every effort to find out as much as possible about the prospective adopter, their home situation and match the family with a cat that is best suited. Often times we are not aware of our rescue cats’ past lives. Observing reactions to different people and situations in foster care can provide some insight to what the best possible scenario would be for a new forever home.

SOS adoptable cats are quarantined for a minimum of 10 days; kittens 14 days. In addition to treatment for any specific ailments or injuries they may have, cats receive a vet check, age appropriate vaccinations and deworming, FelV/FIV testing, microchipping and spay/neuter surgery. All medical care up until the date of adoption is included in the adoption fee. Kittens adopted before they are old enough for their spay/neuter surgery are fixed at our cost at one of our partner vet clinics when they reach the appropriate age.

Why should I adopt from a Rescue?

By adopting from a rescue, not only are you providing a loving home to an animal in need and you are contributing to the reduction of overpopulation and euthanasia in shelters.

Our adoption fees are only a fraction of the cost that you would incur by getting all veterinary work for a ‘free’ cat you got from a neighbor or other source.

Adoption Process

Whether you’re looking for a playful cat, or one who is more laidback. Maybe you’re looking for one that will be the king or queen of the castle, or one that would be good with dogs or kids. Our adoption coordinators are here to help you pick a cat that is a purr-fect addition to your family!

Adoption Application

Every potential adoption begins with an adoption application. We’ll ask you some questions about you, your home, and family to make the best match, and answer any questions you may have.

If you have chosen a kitty from those available, you’re able to move on to the next phase of adoption. Otherwise, you may arrange to meet as many cats or kittens in their foster homes as you need to make your decision.

Additional Adoption Information

  • Meet and greets can be arranged with our foster families once your adoption application has been approved. Cats being housed by PetValu can be visited but all rules set out by PetValu partners must be followed. Cats being housed by Cat Cafes require an appointment with the respective Café.

  • Once you have been approved and have decided on the kitty for you, SOS will send a virtual adoption agreement sent via PandaDoc to be filled out and signed.

    Conditions of Adoption

-Keep the cat indoors at all times, except when on a harness or leash or in a cat enclosure.

-Agree not to declaw the cat at any time, for any reason.

-Agree not to abandon the cat during its lifetime; you will return the cat to SOS if you are unable to continue caring for it.

-Agree NOT to rehome the cat yourself.

  • All adoptable cats are available for an adoption fee. This amount is a mere fraction of the cost you would pay to vet the “free” cat from another source. Our adoption fees go directly back into the rescue cats in care

    Kittens up to 6 months

    $200 per cat

Fee includes: Up-to-date vaccinations (until the date of adoption), deworming, and spay/neuter by six months of age.

    Cats over 6 months

    $200 per cat

Fee includes: up-to-date vaccinations, deworming, rabies, microchip and spay/neuter.

  • We follow the “trial period” method of adoption. This gives the family up to 2 weeks after the adoption to decide whether the cat is right for them. They can return the cat for any reason during this time, and receive a refund minus a $40 processing fee. They are welcome to try another cat instead of accepting a refund. If after a second cat, they still don’t feel it is the right fit, they may be asked to try fostering until they find the right fit.
